Description
Faustino VII Blanco is a white from D.O.Ca. Rioja, made by the Faustino winery from Macabeo, the grape also known here as Viura. The fruit comes from the estate's own vineyards set between the towns of Laguardia and Oyon in Rioja Alavesa, an area of clay and limestone soils that suits fresh white styles. This is an early drinking wine built for freshness rather than ageing. Macabeo buds and ripens late, which helps it avoid spring frost, and it holds a clean, neutral fruit that responds well to a cool fermentation. Here the grapes are pressed gently and fermented at a controlled temperature in stainless steel, with no oak, keeping the wine bright and primary. The colour is pale straw with green tints. The nose is green apple and pear, with citrus and a light floral hint. The palate is dry, light bodied and crisp, the acidity fresh, closing on lemon and a faint bitter almond note typical of the grape. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees in a white wine glass.
