Description
Fattoria di Rodano is a long-established estate at Castellina in Chianti, in the heart of Tuscany, where the Pozzesi family have made wine since the sixteenth century and began bottling their own in the 1960s. Poggialupi is an IGP Toscana red built on Sangiovese, the region's defining grape, rounded out with Merlot. Sangiovese gives the bright cherry fruit, fresh acidity and savoury, earthy character, while Merlot softens the mid-palate and adds plummy flesh. The vineyards grow on the stony clay and limestone soils, locally known as galestro and alberese, that mark the Chianti hills, and the well-drained slopes with their warm days and cool nights keep the fruit ripe yet fresh. The farming is organic. The wine is aged for around eight months in oak, enough to settle the tannins and add a light frame of spice while keeping the focus on the fruit and the site. It pours a bright ruby. The nose shows red cherry, plum and red berries with dried herbs and an earthy note. The palate is medium bodied and savoury, with fresh acidity, fine tannins and a clean, herbal finish that makes it a natural at the table. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It is built for tomato-based dishes, roast and grilled meats and aged cheese.
