Farthofer Organic Rum

Farthofer is an Austrian distillery better known for fruit spirits and grain, and this organic rum carries that fingerprint plainly. Made from molasses and bottled at 40% with no age statement, it sits some distance from a tropical aged rum, reading instead like a fruit eau de vie that happens to be cane based. The nose is the most engaging part, fruity and overripe with banana and a fermented top note.

The palate turns markedly sweet and a touch sharp, with orange peel, maple and a grappa like graininess that owes more to central European distilling than to the Caribbean.
