A 20 year old single cask Uitvlugt blend of pot and column spirit bottled cask strength by Famille Ricci, oddly sweet for the marque at 54.1%, with burnt sugar, citrus and caramelized notes shading into maple, varnish and cream toffee.
Description
Famille Ricci Uitvlugt Exception 2003 is a single cask Demerara from the closed Uitvlugt estate, a blend of pot and column still spirit bottled at cask strength by the French house Famille Ricci. Uitvlugt usually reads as refined and lightly spiced, but this particular cask takes an unusual, sweeter and more caramelized turn.
Bottled at 54.1%, the rum is strange in the best sense for collectors of oddities. The nose is caramelized with burnt sugar, citrus and a mirabelle plum note, while the palate brings citrus, maple, a varnish edge and a clear alcoholic bite. The finish leans into caramelized notes, orange and cream toffee. The alcohol integration is a little rough and the rum is unusually sweet for the profile, recalling cream toffee, maple syrup and butter cookies. This is a quirky, full-proof Uitvlugt for drinkers who enjoy a rum that breaks from its usual house character.
