A 31 year cask strength TDL from 1991 by Famille Ricci, dry and faintly dirty with a Caroni-like edge, showing tar, leather, coconut and oak over tropical fruit and dark chocolate at a big 64.5%.
Description
Famille Ricci bottled this single cask TDL from the 1991 vintage, a 31 year Trinidad rum drawn at cask strength. TDL is Trinidad Distillers Limited, usually associated with lighter, smoother rum, but the older single casks can show real depth, and this one drifts toward the savoury, with hints of the neighbouring Caroni character.
Matured in ex-bourbon oak across more than three decades, it presents a spicy, oaky, candied nose with coconut, then a palate of tropical fruit, wood, spice and tar, finishing peppery and dry with peach and more tar. For its 64.5% it is surprisingly balanced, dry and slightly dirty yet mild and even drinkable, with notably restrained wood for its age. This is an old, characterful Trinidad rum that sits between a mature TDL and a lighter Caroni, a contemplative pour for experienced palates who enjoy power held in check.
