An overproof TDL from 2003 at a bold 62%, finished in a Caroni cask yet keeping its minty tropical-fruit core, with caramel sweetness, firm oak and roasted depth, the Caroni influence staying subtle, unsweetened.
Description
Bottled by Famille Ricci, this Alliance release is a 2003 TDL given an intriguing finish in a Caroni cask, marrying the living Trinidad producer with the island's legendary closed distillery. Drawn as a single cask at a bold 62% and left unsweetened, it is an overproof, experienced-palate Trinidad rum that plays the two Trinidad styles against each other.
The column still molasses spirit leads with woody, tropical fruit, minty and roasted notes on the nose, carried through the palate as tropical fruit, wood and mint, with a finish of mint, wood, tropical fruit and roasted depth. Caramel sweetness and firm oak frame it, while the Caroni cask stays surprisingly subtle, nudging the rum darker and a touch more bitter rather than flooding it with tar. The mint-and-fruit TDL core remains the centre, making this a bold but characterful pick for drinkers who already enjoy the 2003 vintage and want extra intensity.
