A single cask of Hampden from the legendary Trelawny pot stills, layering mango and pineapple over burnt sugar, gingerbread and a buttery, pecan-rich finish, bottled overproof by Famille Ricci at 60.9% and entirely unsweetened.
Description
Famille Ricci's Hampden Rare Single Cask draws on the reference point for high-ester Jamaican funk, the Trelawny distillery that runs 100% pot still and marques from light OWH up to the famous DOK at the legal ceiling. This 2014 cask of marque H sits in the more aromatic band, full of the ripe fruit and overripe intensity the house is built on, selected and bottled as a single cask at full strength.
The aroma is fruity and warm with gingerbread spice, opening onto mango and pineapple on the palate set against burnt sugar and a roasted, nutty pecan note. The finish turns buttery and confectionary, a long sweet-savoury fade that owes nothing to added sugar, which there is none of here. At 60.9% it is concentrated and oily in the classic Hampden mould, the kind of pot-still bottling that rewards a drop of water and a slow approach. A serious cask for the funk-seeking drinker.
