An overproof Port Mourant from Famille Ricci’s Zodiac series, intensely smoky and challenging, with prunes, dried fruit and brown sugar giving way to a bitter, peaty, cigar laced palate that recalls peated whisky at 63.3%.
Description
Famille Ricci bottled this Port Mourant for its Zodiac series, a 2011 Guyanese overproof from the double wooden pot still that gives the heaviest, most polarising Demerara profile. This is among the more difficult and uncompromising PMs, where the marque's typical esters and tobacco are pushed into deep smoke. Bottled unsweetened at high strength, it is squarely for the adventurous.
Molasses based and matured in oak, it noses on prunes, dried fruit, hay and brown sugar, with intense smoke and toasted wood, then turns bitter, smoky and peaty on the palate with cigar and a charred, hay like finish. The smoke is so dominant that it strays close to peated whisky and mezcal territory, with the Guyanese ester markers and tobacco underneath. At 63.3% it is forceful and demanding, a rum that will reward drinkers who love smoky, peaty spirits and challenge those who do not. An intense, smoke driven Port Mourant for experienced palates.
