Description
Mas del Périé is Fabien Jouves's estate on the Trespoux plateau above Cahors, in south-west France, where he farms biodynamically and has made his wines naturally, without oenological additions, since founding the domaine in 2006. Haute Côte de Fruit is a Malbec bottled as a Vin de France, the fresh, fruit-driven face of the grape rather than its darker, structured side. The high plots at Trespoux sit on Kimmeridgian limestone and clay, cooler and more mineral than the valley floor, so the vines ripen at altitude with cool nights that keep acidity fresh and the alcohol modest at 12.5 percent. The wine is made with native yeasts and minimal handling and sees no oak, which keeps the focus on bright, direct fruit and a supple, easy texture. It shows a bright, deep purple ruby, with dark berries, plum and red cherry on the nose over black pepper, dried herbs and a floral lift. The palate is juicy and fresh, with soft, low tannins, lively acidity and a clean, fruit-driven finish. This is Malbec for early drinking rather than the cellar. Serve lightly chilled at 14 to 15 degrees, with charcuterie, poultry or grilled vegetables.
