Evodia is a 100% old-vine Garnacha from D.O. Calatayud, grown on high-altitude slate soils from vines around a century old. Fermented in stainless steel, it is a ripe, generous red of red berries, cherry and warm spice.
Description
Evodia comes from Bodegas San Alejandro in D.O. Calatayud, in the highlands of Aragón. It is made entirely from Garnacha taken from vineyards around a hundred years old, planted at high altitude in slate-rich soils. Old vines of this age yield very little, around 4000 kilograms per hectare, which concentrates flavour in the few bunches they carry, while the slate drains hard and pushes roots deep for water and minerality. The altitude is central to the style: hot days ripen the fruit fully to 14% alcohol, but cold nights preserve acidity and aromatic freshness, so the wine is ripe and generous without losing its lift. The vines are grown as low bush vines with natural rainfall. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks over twenty to twenty-five days at 24 to 26 degrees, an approach that keeps the focus on pure fruit and the character of the old vines rather than oak. The wine is deep, bright ruby. The nose shows ripe red berries, cherry and a peppery, herbal edge. The palate is full and juicy, with supple tannins, a stony freshness and a finish of liquorice and warm spice. Serve at 16 degrees. It pairs well with grilled lamb and roasted vegetables.
