Matsu is the Toro project of the Vintae group, set in the Castilla y León appellation where the Tempranillo clone known locally as Tinta de Toro produces deep, powerful reds. This gift case gathers the four wines of the range, presented as the stages of life: the youthful El Pícaro, the balanced El Recio, the deep old vine El Viejo and the structured La Jefa. Toro sits on the high western Castilian plateau, where sandy and stony soils, old ungrafted vines and a harsh continental climate with hot days and cold nights yield small, concentrated berries with thick skins. That gives wines of dark colour, ripe black fruit and substantial tannin, with the older vine bottlings adding depth and savoury complexity from extended ageing. Across the case expect blackberry and plum, liquorice, spice and a firm, structured palate. The range moves from fresh and fruit driven to dense and oak framed. Serve the reds at sixteen to eighteen degrees, decanting the older wines. They suit grilled red meat, roast lamb and aged Manchego.
