Description
Espelt Saulo is a young red wine from D.O. Emporda, made by Celler Espelt from Garnacha and Carignan. The winery was founded by Lluis and Quimeta Espelt in 2000 and is now run by the third generation. The vineyards lie near the Costa Brava, exposed to the Tramontana, a strong northerly wind that can exceed 120 km/h and keeps the vines healthy and dry. Winters are mild and summers hot but tempered by the marine influence, with an average annual temperature of 14 to 16 degrees. The wine is unoaked, vinified to keep the fruit fresh and direct, with no barrel ageing to mask the variety. It is bright, vivid red, with raspberry, red cherry and a little blackberry, a touch of black pepper and dried herbs from the Garnacha and Carignan. The palate is medium bodied, juicy and approachable, with bright acidity, light tannin and a fresh, fruit-led finish. The wine is vegan and farmed with respect for the land. Serve slightly cool, at 14 to 16 degrees. It suits charcuterie, grilled vegetables, roast chicken and lighter red meat dishes.
