Espectacle is a single-vineyard Garnacha from a centenarian Montsant vineyard, made by the team behind Clos Mogador. Fourteen months in large foudres give concentrated red fruit, garrigue herbs and a peppery, mineral depth at 14.8%.
Description
Espectacle is a single-variety Garnacha Tinta from D.O. Montsant in Catalonia, the work of an experienced team led by Rene Barbier of Clos Mogador fame, drawn from one old terraced vineyard of vines around a century old. These ancient plants crop tiny quantities of intensely flavoured fruit, the source of the wine's concentration and depth. The vineyard sits on the poor schist and slate soils of the Montsant hills, which drain hard and force the roots deep for water and minerals, while the altitude and cool nights keep the wine fresh in a warm climate. The fruit is fermented and then aged fourteen months in large foudres, where the bigger format means a gentle, slow oxygen exchange that builds texture and integrates tannin without adding obvious oak flavour. The colour is deep, dense red. The nose is concentrated, with ripe red and dark fruit, garrigue herbs, black pepper, liquorice and a smoky, mineral note. The palate is full bodied and intense yet balanced, with ripe tannins, fresh acidity and a long, savoury, stony finish. Serve at 17 to 18C, decanted, with roast lamb, beef or mushroom and game dishes.
