María Barrena and Josep Tort make this brisat from Xarel·lo Vermell, the pink skinned Xarel·lo, on five generations of family vines in the Foix natural park, Penedès. Three months on skins in amphorae give a fresh, light amber wine of apricot, peach and floral lift.
Description
Entre Vinyes is the project of María Barrena and Josep Tort in the natural park of Foix, in the Baix Penedès of Catalonia, working vines that Josep's family has farmed for five generations. This brisat, the Catalan term for a skin contact white, is made from Xarel·lo Vermell, the pink skinned mutation of Xarel·lo, whose tinted skins give the wine its amber tone. The vineyards sit on Mediterranean limestone soils within a protected natural park, farmed with care under a mild coastal climate. The grapes are macerated on their skins for three months in clay amphorae, which draws phenolics, light tannin and colour from the skins while the porous clay allows a slow, gentle exchange of oxygen that softens the texture without adding oak flavour. The result keeps low alcohol and bright acidity. Natural and organic, made with minimal intervention. The colour is a light, almost golden amber. The nose shows apricot, white peach and orange peel with white flowers and a herbal note, and the palate is fresh, light and lightly grippy with a clean, vivacious finish. Serve well chilled at 9 to 11 degrees. Good with seafood, white fish and salads.
