Bodegas Enrique Mendoza makes Finca Xaconero in the DO Alicante, in Spain’s arid Mediterranean south east. A blend of Monastrell, Garnacha and Syrah aged 12 months in French oak, it is ripe and warming, with plum, pepper and dried herbs.
Description
Bodegas Enrique Mendoza works in the DO Alicante in the Valencia region of south east Spain, an area with an arid Mediterranean climate of mild temperatures, abundant sunshine and very low rainfall concentrated between autumn and spring. The estate at Las Virtudes manages that scarcity of water to produce ripe, concentrated fruit. Finca Xaconero is a blend of Monastrell, Garnacha and Syrah. Monastrell is the regional speciality, a thick skinned, late ripening grape that needs the heat and long season Alicante provides, giving dark fruit, structure and a savoury, gamey depth. Garnacha adds ripe red fruit and warmth, while Syrah brings colour, pepper and aromatic lift. The hot, dry climate and poor limestone soils restrict yields and build concentration, while the proximity to the Mediterranean tempers the heat enough to retain freshness. The wine is aged for 12 months in French Allier oak barrels, which adds fine tannin, a gentle spice and slow oxygen exchange that integrates the components. The result is deep ruby with aromas of plum, red berries, black pepper and dried Mediterranean herbs. The palate is full and warming, with ripe dark fruit, a liquorice edge, firm but supple tannins and a savoury, earthy finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. It suits grilled lamb and roast red meats.
