A Madeiran cane-juice rum from Engenhos do Norte, finished fittingly in Madeira casks, with sugarcane, grass and honey up front and a soft floral palate of pear and honey, oily and gently sweet at 40%.
Description
Engenhos do Norte distils on the island of Madeira, one of the few places outside the French territories legally allowed to use the term rhum agricole. This Rum Agricola da Norte is made from fresh sugar cane juice and finished in Madeira casks, a fitting local touch given the island's famous fortified wine, bottled at 40%.
The pot-still spirit keeps a grassy, sugarcane-led character lifted by honey and yellow fruit, while the palate turns floral and soft with pear and a notably oily, almost milky texture. The finish stays grassy and honeyed with that same oily weight. It carries a pleasant natural sweetness from the cane and cask rather than reading as a dry blanc, an approachable everyday agricole and a sound choice for a relaxed Madeira-flavoured take on a cane-juice rum.
