A delicate single cask cane-juice rum from Madeira’s Engenhos do Norte, six years in a Madeira cask at undiluted 50.6%, leading on black tea, honey and fermented funk with a butterscotch, mocha palate and a salty, yeasty finish.
Description
Engenhos do Norte distills on Madeira, one of the few regions outside the French islands permitted to use the agricole name, working from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice. This 970 Single Cask is a six-year-old bottled at full strength, 50.6% and undiluted from a single cask finished in Madeira wood.
This is a lighter, more delicate take than many cane-juice rums, leaning subtle rather than brash. The nose offers black tea and honey with a fermented, slightly funky edge, while the palate brings mocha, butterscotch and more tea, the Madeira cask adding a soft richness. The finish turns distinctive with yeast, cream and a saline note. There is a restraint here closer to fine whisky that sets it apart from heavier, in your face cane rums. A nuanced single cask for drinkers who appreciate detail over power.
