Description
Encina del Inglés Blanco is made by Finca La Melonera in D.O. Málaga-Sierras de Málaga, in mountainous Andalusia. It is a dry white built around Moscatel de Grano Menudo at sixty percent, with Forastera at thirty and a little Pedro Ximénez, drawn from vines twelve to fifteen years old. The vineyards sit at altitude on clay-loam soils, and the mountain climate brings marked swings between hot days and cool nights. That wide diurnal range is central to the wine, since the cold nights lock in aromatics and acidity while the warm days ripen the fruit, giving Moscatel's natural perfume without sweetness. Grapes are picked by hand to keep the fruit intact, and cool fermentation in stainless steel protects the aromatic compounds. The colour is pale straw. The nose is markedly floral, with orange blossom, white flowers and rose over white peach, apricot and a citrus lift of lemon and orange peel. The palate is dry, light and fresh, the aromatics carrying through to a clean finish. Serve it well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees in a white wine glass. It suits salads, white fish, shellfish and lightly spiced dishes.
