Finca La Melonera makes this Sierras de Málaga red from high mountain vineyards between 600 and 900 metres, blending Cabernet, Garnacha, Tempranillo, Syrah and Merlot. Six months in oak give ripe plum, black pepper and a dark, herbal depth.
Description
Encina del Inglés is a mountain red from Finca La Melonera in the Sierras de Málaga, in Andalusia. The blend draws on Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha, Tempranillo, Syrah and Merlot from the estate's own vineyards, planted between 600 and 900 metres on clay-loam soils with a presence of limestone. Altitude is decisive here: in a hot southern region, the elevation brings a marked day-to-night temperature swing that slows ripening, holds acidity and builds aromatic detail and colour in the young vines, which are around eight years old. The wine is aged six months in oak, a short passage that rounds the tannins and adds a light frame of spice and dark chocolate while keeping the fruit fresh and forward. Expect a deep, saturated colour and a nose of ripe plum and black cherry, with crushed black pepper, dried mountain herbs and a touch of cocoa and liquorice. The palate is full and warm at 14.5 per cent, with ripe tannins and a savoury, herb-edged finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees, decanting briefly. It suits grilled red meats, lamb and tomato-rich dishes.
