Enate grows this aromatic Gewürztraminer in the D.O. Somontano, at the foot of the Pyrenees. Highly perfumed and dry, it shows rose petals, ginger and ripe stone fruit, with the varietal’s soft, exotic character.
Description
Enate is a leading estate in Somontano, a small appellation in the north-east of Spain where the Pyrenees meet the Ebro basin. This wine is made entirely from Gewürztraminer, one of the most aromatic grapes in the world and a variety that has adapted well to the region. Somontano sits at the foothills of the mountains, and the altitude is what makes the style work: warm days ripen this pink-skinned grape to full aromatic intensity, while cold mountain nights preserve enough acidity to keep a naturally low-acid variety fresh and balanced. The vineyards lie on stony, well-drained soils that suit its early ripening. In the cellar the wine is made in a cool, protective way with no oak, so the focus stays entirely on the grape's exuberant perfume. Expect a bright pale colour, a powerfully floral nose of rose petals and white flowers lifted by ginger, and a palate of ripe white peach, apricot and melon with a touch of honey, dry but broad and soft in texture. Serve chilled at around 10C in a generous glass. Its perfume and low acidity make it well suited to spiced and aromatic dishes.
