Description
This Grüner Veltliner is a Federspiel from Emmerich Knoll, one of the estates that made the reputation of the Wachau in Austria. The family work with native varieties across the region's terraced sites and favour minimal intervention. Federspiel is the middle Wachau ripeness category, a dry, medium bodied style between the lighter Steinfeder and the fuller Smaragd. The vines grow on steep terraces of primary rock, gneiss and loess above the Danube, where the stony soils and the pull between warm days and cold nights off the river give the wine its tension and drive. The wine is aged on its lees, which adds a rounder texture and a savoury depth while keeping the fruit fresh and the minerality clear. Farming is by sustainable method. The colour is pale with green tints. The nose is fresh and stony, showing green apple and citrus with the grape's signature white pepper, and the palate is dry, mineral and precise with a savoury, lingering finish. Serve it around 10 degrees.
