Emmanuel Darnaud makes this Crozes-Hermitage from Syrah in the northern Rhône. Aged 18 months in oak, Au Fil du Temps is a classic, peppery Syrah of red and dark fruit, olive and smoky, savoury depth.
Description
Emmanuel Darnaud is a northern Rhône vigneron who began with 1.5 hectares in 2001 and is now an established name in Crozes-Hermitage. Au Fil du Temps is pure Syrah from this appellation, where the grape gives its most savoury, peppery expression. The northern Rhône climate is cooler than the south, so the Syrah ripens slowly and keeps fresh acidity and an aromatic, peppery character rather than jammy ripeness. The wine is aged 18 months in oak barrels. The long élevage allows slow oxygen exchange through the wood, softening the tannin and integrating the oak, while keeping the wine's savoury core intact rather than masking it with wood. The result is a medium to full-bodied red at 14 percent. The nose is classic northern Rhône Syrah: red and dark berry, cracked black pepper, black olive, smoke and dried herbs, with an earthy, savoury undertow. The palate is structured and fresh, the fruit framed by fine tannin and bright acidity through a long, peppery finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanting an hour ahead. It suits grilled red meat, game and herb-roasted dishes.
