Emilio Moro makes Polvorete from Godello in D.O. Bierzo, a family house better known for Ribera del Duero reds. It is a fresh, young, lightly bodied white with green apple, pear and delicate white flowers, and a bright, balanced finish.
Description
Polvorete is Emilio Moro's Godello from D.O. Bierzo, in the north west of Castilla y León. The family winery dates to 1891 and is rooted in Ribera del Duero, where it built its reputation, and it farms a large holding of owned vineyards. Bierzo sits in a sheltered basin between the plateau and the mountains of Galicia, with a mild climate that blends Atlantic and continental influences and soils of slate and clay over the slopes and valley floor. Cooler, wetter conditions than the central plateau suit Godello, giving orchard and citrus fruit with a floral edge and lively acidity. This is a young, fresh style, fermented cool in stainless steel with no oak so the primary fruit and florals stay in focus. The wine is pale with green flashes. The nose is bright and fragrant, showing green apple, pear and delicate white flowers over a light citrus and herbal note. The palate is light bodied, fresh and balanced, with clean acidity carrying a crisp finish. This is a wine to drink young and cool rather than to age. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees. It works with light fish, shellfish and salads.
