A 21 year Long Pond from Elizabeth Yard, this leans more whisky like than funky, oily and woody with banana, marzipan, smoke and camphor, an unsweetened single cask Jamaican at a substantial 51.3%.
Description
Long Pond is the historic Wedderburn house of Trelawny, usually funky and fruit forward, but this 21 year single cask from Elizabeth Yard takes an unusual turn. Rather than loud esters, it offers an oily, woody, almost peaty character that some compare to Islay whisky, a distinctive long aged outlier.
Distilled from molasses on the pot still and matured in ex-bourbon oak in Europe, the slow continental years build wood and earthy depth. The aroma is orange, ester, mango and oak, the palate turns oily and woody with mango and lemon, and the finish brings roasted wood, camphor and a dry edge. There is banana, tropical fruit, marzipan and light smoke threading through, more standard ripe fruit than high ester funk. Reviewers note how unusual and complex it is, an oily, smoky Long Pond that rewards a good rest in the glass, well suited to drinkers who enjoy both Jamaican rum and peated whisky.
