Scala Dei, the founding winery of D.O.Q. Priorat and heir to the Carthusian monks’ vineyards, makes this young red from Garnacha with Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Grown on the region’s slate licorella soils, it is fresh and structured, with red fruit, pepper and stony minerality.
Description
El Tribut de Scala Dei comes from D.O.Q. Priorat, a steep, isolated region in Catalonia in north-east Spain, made by Scala Dei, the estate that founded the appellation and farms vineyards first planted by Carthusian monks. The blend is led by Garnacha, the region's traditional grape, with Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Priorat's signature is its soil: llicorella, a black slate that fractures easily so the vines drive their roots deep through the rock for water and minerals, yielding tiny, concentrated berries and the stony character the region is known for. The vineyards climb hillside terraces in a hot, dry climate tempered by altitude and cool nights. This is a young red, made to show the fruit and the terroir directly with little or no oak ageing, so the wine keeps its bright primary character and slate-driven freshness. The colour is deep cherry red. The nose shows fresh red berries and cherry, black pepper from the Syrah, wild thyme and a clear mineral, stony note. The palate is structured and fresh, with firm tannin, lively acidity and a long, savoury, mineral finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It suits roast lamb and grilled red meat.
