Vinos del Paseante makes El Pispa in Montsant from Cariñena and Garnacha grown on terraced vineyards of white stone and thyme. Barrel aged, it shows ripe red and black fruit, mineral grip and a savoury herbal note.
Description
El Pispa is part of Vinos del Paseante, the exploratory project of Raventós Codorníu that seeks out Spanish wines of clear identity. This red comes from the D.O. Montsant in Catalonia, from terraced vineyards set among white stone, thyme and a dry, vibrant landscape. The poor stony soils and warm Mediterranean climate, tempered by altitude, ripen Cariñena and Garnacha fully while the meagre ground restrains vigour and concentrates the fruit, lending the mineral, herbal character of the region. After fermentation the wine ages in oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange through the staves softens the tannins and adds a fine spice and toast that frame rather than mask the fruit. It is deep and lively in the glass, with ripe red and black fruit on the nose wrapped in mineral nuance, a background of dried thyme and a subtle roasted note. The palate is full and flavoursome, with ripe tannins, a stony freshness and a long savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanting briefly, with grilled lamb, beef or vegetable dishes from the grill.
