Celler Carlania makes this Conca de Barberà red from Trepat, a local grape grown on a 50-year-old vineyard at Finca els Corrals. Unoaked and young, it is pale and fragrant with red berry, cherry and a floral lift.
Description
El Petit Carlania is a varietal Trepat from Celler Carlania, founded in 2007 in Barberà de la Conca in the Catalan appellation of Conca de Barberà. The winery farms organically and is devoted in particular to Trepat, an indigenous grape long used for rosé and sparkling base wine and only recently shown as a serious red. This bottling comes from Finca els Corrals, a 50-year-old vineyard. Conca de Barberà is a cool inland valley ringed by mountains, where the altitude and fresh nights suit a late-ripening, naturally pale and high-acid grape like Trepat. The wine is made young and without oak, a choice that keeps the fruit clean and the colour bright, since there is no barrel tannin or oxidative ageing to darken or weight it. Expect a light, translucent ruby colour and a fragrant nose of fresh red berries, red currant and cherry, with white flowers, a touch of black pepper and a cool earthy edge. The palate is light at 12 per cent, with crisp acidity, fine, low tannins and a fresh finish. Natural and vegan. Serve cool at 13 to 14 degrees. It suits charcuterie, pork, poultry and mushrooms.
