El Perro Verde is a Rueda Verdejo made by Angel and Javier Cachazo with Vila Viniteca. Grapes from three Valladolid vineyards, harvested in September and fermented cool, give green apple, tropical fruit and a citrus-fresh finish.
Description
El Perro Verde is a varietal Verdejo from D.O. Rueda, made by Angel Lorenzo and his son Javier Cachazo in collaboration with Vila Viniteca, part of the Uvas Felices group. The fruit comes from three plots around Valladolid, Rodillana, Bobadilla del Campo and El Sotillo, with El Sotillo supplying half the blend. Rueda sits on a high plateau of gravelly, stony soils over limestone, where wide diurnal swings between hot days and cold nights preserve acidity and aromatics in the ripening grapes. The September harvest, destemming and gentle pressing, followed by a cool fermentation in stainless steel, keeps the wine fresh and protects its fruit and floral character. The colour is pale straw with green tints. The nose is aromatic, with green apple, melon and a lift of white flowers over citrus peel. The palate is crisp and dry, with lemon, pear and the faint bitter-herb thyme note typical of the grape, closing clean and mineral. This is a young wine built for freshness rather than age. Serve at 8 to 10C. It works well as an aperitif and with shellfish, white fish and green salads.
