El Hato y el Garabato make this organic red in D.O. Arribes from Juan Garcia, the local grape of the Spanish-Portuguese border. At 12 percent it is light and fresh, with red berry fruit and a herbal, earthy edge.
Description
El Hato y el Garabato farm organically in D.O. Arribes, the remote, terraced country where the Duero river marks the border between Spain and Portugal. The wine is built on Juan Garcia, a regional variety that gives light bodied, aromatic reds with bright acidity. The steep schist and granite terraces and the influence of the deep river gorge create a particular microclimate, with old, low-yielding vines that ripen gently. At 12 percent alcohol this is a fresh, lighter style, and the fourteen months in barrel are used to round and integrate rather than to add weight, with slow oxygen exchange softening the tannins while the fruit stays in the lead. Expect a medium to light red with red cherry and raspberry fruit, wild herbs, a touch of black pepper and an earthy, stony undertone. The palate is fresh and supple with gentle tannins and a savoury finish. Serve slightly cool at 14 to 16 degrees, which suits its lighter frame. It works with white meats, charcuterie and mushroom dishes rather than heavy roasts.
