Description
El Grifo Malvasía Colección Semidulce is an off-dry white from D.O. Lanzarote, produced at Bodegas El Grifo in San Bartolomé, founded in 1775 and the oldest winery in the Canary Islands. The vines are pre-phylloxera and planted in black volcanic sand, each dug into a pit and sheltered by low stone walls against the constant alisio trade winds. This volcanic soil retains moisture and lends the wine a smoky, saline minerality, while the low latitude means growers must halt the vine by pruning in February. Malvasía Volcánica keeps its aromatic lift and stone-fruit character here, and the wine is left with a touch of residual sugar to balance its acidity rather than to read as sweet. It is bright pale gold. The nose is ripe pineapple and white peach with white flowers, apricot and a note of molasses. The palate is soft and off-dry, with honeyed fruit set against fresh acidity and a mineral, faintly smoky finish. Serve chilled at around 8 to 10 degrees. Its gentle sweetness makes it a good foil for spice and for fruit-based puddings.
