Description
El Grifo Malvasia Coleccion Seco is a dry white from D.O. Lanzarote, made by El Grifo, one of the oldest wineries in Spain, founded in 1775. The vines grow in the volcanic landscape of Lanzarote, planted in pits dug into black lapilli, the porous volcanic gravel that traps overnight moisture and protects the roots from the trade winds. This black volcanic soil, combined with the Atlantic setting, gives the wine its mineral, saline backbone and holds freshness in a warm climate. The grape is Malvasia Volcanica, naturally aromatic, made dry and unoaked to keep its perfume and Atlantic edge clear. The colour is pale yellow. The nose is floral and expressive, with jasmine and white flowers over white peach, apricot and a touch of ginger spice. The palate is dry and fresh, with citrus peel and melon carried by a salty, mineral finish that reflects the volcanic ground. This is a young, aromatic wine to drink for its freshness. Serve at 9 to 11C. It suits shellfish, grilled white fish and lightly spiced dishes.
