Description
El Gorú is a red from Ego Bodegas in D.O. Jumilla, in Murcia, blending old-vine Monastrell with Syrah and Petit Verdot. The estate runs twenty-five hectares of mostly ungrafted Monastrell averaging fifty years of age, the local variety that thrives in the hot dry climate here. Jumilla bakes under long sun, so Monastrell ripens deeply and carries high natural sugar and a warm fruit-forward profile, while the older vines and low yields concentrate the fruit. Syrah adds pepper and colour, Petit Verdot tannin and a dark backbone. The wine completes malolactic fermentation to round the texture, then sees a short four months in American oak, which adds a touch of vanilla and sweet spice without weighing down the ripe fruit. The colour is deep vibrant red. The nose shows black plum and ripe cherry over blackberry and a subtle spice. The palate is full bodied, warm and rounded, the tannins soft and the finish generous. A ripe modern style at an easy price. Serve at 17C. Pairs with grilled and braised red meats.
