Description
El Bandarra Blanco is a Catalan white vermouth from the Virgili brothers, who set out to bring vermut to a younger audience. Its base is a white wine of Garnacha Blanca and Xarel·lo, the latter a Penedès staple that brings fresh acidity and a faint herbal grip well suited to a vermouth foundation. The wine is fermented and held in stainless steel, which preserves the bright citrus character before the botanicals are added. More than 50 herbal and botanical extracts go into the maceration, among them vanilla, clove and the wormwood that defines the style, before the blend is sweetened with grape must nectar to soften the bitterness. The result is a pale white vermouth, lighter and fresher than the red styles. The nose leads with citrus, mint and vanilla. The palate is fresh and flavoursome, with the citric character to the fore and the wormwood holding a gentle bitter line beneath the sweetness. At 15 percent it sits in standard vermouth range. Serve well chilled over ice with a slice of lemon or a sprig of mint, on its own as an aperitif or alongside light seafood and salads.
