Description
Eigashima Shuzo's White Oak range represents single malt production at the Akashi distillery in Hyogo prefecture, operating since the 1980s under Japan's oldest whisky licence. This 6 Years Old was bottled in 2018 as a single cask, cask strength release at 50%, matured in a red wine cask and selected for the European market.
An additional year in the red wine cask beyond the comparable 5 Year Old releases allows the berry and dried-fruit influence to deepen and integrate. Red cherry, blackcurrant and a soft oak spice develop over Eigashima's typically clean, fruit-forward new make, with the wine-seasoned wood lending a light tannin and finishing dryness. At 50% the balance between distillate freshness and cask character is well-measured.
