Description
Eigashima Shuzo's White Oak single malt is produced at the Akashi distillery in Hyogo prefecture under Japan's oldest whisky licence, first issued in 1919. This bottling is a single cask, cask strength release at 63%, distilled in 2015 and bottled in 2020 after five years in a white wine cask, released for the Japanese domestic market.
The flavour profile here takes a different direction from the typical fruit-forward white wine releases: hay, malt extract and a subtle smoky note are evident alongside the lighter wine influence, suggesting a more cereal-driven character from this particular cask. The white wine wood adds a fresh, slightly mineral backdrop rather than sweetness, and at 63% the whisky is intense and direct, reflecting the full uncut character of this individual barrel.
