Description
A 5 Years Old single malt distilled in 2015 at Eigashima Shuzo's Akashi distillery in Hyogo and bottled in 2020 at cask strength, 50% ABV, for the Japanese market. Eigashima, holder of Japan's oldest whisky licence, is known for its varied cask programme, and Oloroso sherry maturation is one of the most prominent threads in that work.
Five years in Oloroso casks brings a distinctly sherried quality to the clean Eigashima new make, with dried fruit, warming spice and a soft, rounded sweetness noted in the flavour profile. The coastal Hyogo air would typically contribute a subtle maritime undercurrent to the richer sherry influence. Bottled at cask strength without dilution, the expression shows what the distillery's spirit can carry from a single wood type over a half-decade.
