Ego Bodegas makes this Jumilla red from Monastrell and Syrah, the warm-climate signature of Murcia. A short spell in American oak gives ripe plum, black cherry and spice over a generous, full-bodied palate.
Description
Ego Bodegas was founded in 2011 by Santos Ortiz and Ioana Paunescu in D.O. Jumilla, in Murcia in south-eastern Spain. Promesa blends Monastrell, the region's thick-skinned native grape, with Syrah, both well suited to Jumilla's hot, dry climate and poor limestone soils. The low rainfall and high summer heat ripen the fruit fully, building deep colour, ripe tannin and the generous alcohol that marks the region. The wine spends two months in American oak barrels, a short ageing that lends vanilla and sweet spice through oxygen exchange with the wood while keeping the wine fresh and fruit-forward. The colour is deep, opaque purple-red. The nose is ripe and intense, with plum, black cherry and blackberry over black pepper, liquorice and a vanilla note from the oak. The palate is full and warm at fourteen percent, with rounded tannin, dark chocolate and a long, spiced finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. It pairs with grilled beef, roast lamb and richly spiced dishes.
