Description
Quota Nave is an organic red from Eduardo Torres Acosta on Mount Etna, an unusual blend of Nerello Mascalese and Garnacha Tinta co-fermented with the white varieties Carricante, Coda di Volpe and Grecanico Dorato. Co-fermenting red and white grapes together, an old field-blend practice, lifts the aromatics and lightens the colour and tannin while keeping the wine fresh. The vineyards sit on the volcanic slopes of Etna in the IGT Terre Siciliane, where black, free-draining soils and the altitude of the mountain give cool nights, a long ripening season and naturally high acidity. The wine ages in foudres, large oak vats that allow gentle oxygen exchange without imparting much wood character, so the fruit and the floral lift stay in front. It pours a bright, pale red. The nose is red berry and cherry with white flowers, dried herbs and a twist of citrus peel. The palate is light-bodied and fresh, with low, fine tannin, brisk acidity and a stony, mineral finish. This is a red to serve cool, at 14 to 15 degrees, and it works as well with lighter dishes as it does with poultry.
