Description
An official release of Edradour, a 22 year old, from 1999, at 55.8%, 1331 bottles in all. Edradour is a small batch Highland malt, owned by the independent bottler Signatory Vintage. It is one of the smallest traditional distilleries in Scotland, long run by just two or three hands.
The spirit was run through the small stills with their boil ball purifiers, the worm tubs lending a weighty, oily character. An Oloroso cask held it, shaping the oily spirit over the years. Through the evaporative decades the spirit concentrates, esters folding into dried fruit and beeswax. A gentle maturation suits the oily make, the nutty richness growing with time. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and coconut over the fruit. Active wood frames the rich fruit without overwhelming the oily Highland spirit. The tiny stills and worm tubs give an oily spirit that takes the cask well.
At cask strength 55.8% it is big and oily. A rich, nutty sweetness, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. A dried fruit and a polished oak give it depth. The close is oily and warming, fruit over a gentle oak. This is the oily, rich malt of tiny Edradour.
