An official Ballechin, a 15 year old, 2007, at 57.5%. Soft ash and a rich, nutty oil, with a nutty, raisined sweetness from the cask. A small batch peated Highland malt, smoky and oily in style. Peated to around fifty parts per million, named after a lost local distillery. This is Ballechin, Edradour’s peated single malt.

Description

Ballechin from the distillery, a 15 year old, from 2007, cask 199+200+203, at 57.5%, 1258 bottles in all. Ballechin is the smoky side of Edradour, a heavily peated malt from Pitlochry. A 2018 expansion added a second still house, the production still small and traditional.

Drawn off the tiny stills and cooled in worm tubs, smoke over an oily spirit, for a smoky, oily make of peat and dried fruit. Finished in a Madeira cask, the wood building over the oily, full bodied spirit. Through oxidative maturity esters concentrate, dried fruit and chocolate rising under the oily smoke. Maturation in the dunnage warehouses at Pitlochry is slow and steady. Active wood frames the rich fruit without overwhelming the oily Highland spirit. The peated Ballechin lays heavy smoke over the rich, oily Edradour spirit. A gentle maturation suits the oily make, the nutty richness growing with time.

At cask strength 57.5% it is big and oily. A smoky, fruity richness, with a nutty, raisined sweetness from the cask. A baked apple and a peppery smoke lift it. Peat smoke, dried fruit and a soft oak see out a long finish. This is the smoky side of tiny Edradour.
