An official Ballechin, a 13 year old, at 54.9%. Smoky and oily, with dried fruit, chocolate and a soft ash, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. Ballechin is the heavily peated single malt from tiny Edradour at Pitlochry. Owned since 2002 by the independent bottler Signatory Vintage. This is a rich, smoky malt from one of Scotland’s smallest distilleries.

Description

Ballechin from the distillery, a 13 year old, cask Batch 001, at 54.9%. Ballechin is a peated Highland single malt from Edradour, owned by Signatory Vintage. It once supplied blends such as House of Lords and King's Ransom.

Distilled from heavily peated malt in tiny copper stills and worm tubs, giving a rich, peated Highland spirit. An Oloroso cask held it, shaping the oily spirit over the years. Through integration spirit and wood marry, vanillin settling into vanilla as the peat smoke softens to a mellow, oily reek. Active wood frames the rich fruit without overwhelming the oily Highland spirit. Years in oak round the spirit, the dried fruit and chocolate deepening over the oily core. Long ageing turns the rich make towards dried fruit, fig and a soft spice. The tiny stills and worm tubs give an oily spirit that takes the cask well. A 2018 expansion added a second still house, the production still small and traditional.

At its natural 54.9% it is rich and full bodied. Peat smoke, fig and a soft chocolate, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. Soft ash and a nutty oil sit behind the cask. The finish is long, smoky and gently spiced. This is the smoky side of tiny Edradour.
