Edradour 1st Fill Sauvignon Cask Finish 10 Years Old 2014

Edradour from the distillery, a 10 year old, from 2014, cask 704, 706, at 48.2%, 1623 bottles in all. Edradour is a Highland single malt distilled in a pocket glen near Pitlochry since 1825. A rare Morton refrigerator still cools the wort, one of the last in use in Scotland.

The spirit was made in the smallest of stills and condensed in worm tubs, the worm tubs lending a weighty, oily character. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, vanillin lending vanilla under the fruit. Through integration spirit and wood marry, vanillin settling into a rounded vanilla as ethyl esters lend a riper apple and dried fruit. Refill oak lets the rich, oily Edradour character lead the way. Years in oak round the spirit, the dried fruit and chocolate deepening over the oily core. A 2018 expansion added a second still house, the production still small and traditional. It was bought in 2002 by Andrew Symington of the independent bottler Signatory Vintage.

At a natural 48.2% it is full and oily. Dried fruit, chocolate and a nutty oil, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The mouthfeel is thick and oily, the fruit on a creamy body. The finish runs long, nutty and warming. This is the oily, rich malt of tiny Edradour.
