Edetaria grows this Terra Alta red from 40 year old Garnacha and Carinena on stony riverbed and clay soils. Twelve months in French oak give a generous, warming red of ripe berries, pepper and Mediterranean herbs.
Description
Edetaria Seleccio Negre comes from the Edetaria winery in D.O. Terra Alta in Catalonia, made under oenologist Joan Angel Lliberia from five hectares of 40 year old vines on terraces and slopes in the Plana de Gandesa. The blend is Garnacha Tinta, Carinena and the local Garnacha Peluda, grown on three distinct soils: stony ancient riverbed, loamy clay-rich tapas and the chalky tapas blanc. The warm, dry Mediterranean climate ripens the Garnacha fully, giving the wine its generous body and 15 percent alcohol, while the inland altitude and cool nights preserve freshness and the limestone soils lend a saline lift. The wine ages 12 months in French oak, which knits the tannins and adds vanilla and spice without overwhelming the fruit. It pours deep red, with ripe raspberry and plum on the nose over black pepper, garrigue herbs and liquorice. The palate is full and warming, with ripe tannin, a savoury mineral core and a long, spiced finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It suits grilled and roast red meats and hearty stews.
