A 1998 Caroni from Duncan Taylor, twenty four years old at cask strength 50.7%, an accessible single cask of column distillate showing varnish, lavender and raisin with the rubber and tube notes of the distillery.
Description
This single cask comes from Caroni, the Trinidad distillery that ceased production in 2003 and has been bottled from dwindling stock ever since. Duncan Taylor, a Scottish house, released it under its Quarterdeck label from the 1998 vintage at twenty four years old and a natural 50.7%, drawn from the lighter column still side of the distillery's varied output.
Molasses distillate aged this long in ex-bourbon oak carries the distillery's hallmark varnish and rubber alongside a floral lavender note, with raisin and young wood on the palate and a tube-like rubber edge that marks the house style. This is one of the more approachable Caronis, the heavier industrial intensity held back rather than front and centre, which makes it a softer entry point into the distillery for drinkers curious about the name without the full diesel weight.
