A 35 year old Dumbarton single grain from the Huntly bottler Duncan Taylor, 1987, at 49.4%. Coconut, vanilla and a polished oak fill the glass. It was the largest grain distillery in Scotland, the backbone of Ballantine’s. Its grain was the backbone of the Ballantine’s blend for decades. This is a rare single grain, silent since 2002.

Description
A 35 year old Dumbarton from the Huntly bottler Duncan Taylor, distilled in 1987, from cask 10037719, bottled at 49.4%, one of 80 bottles. Dumbarton ran continuous column stills by the Clyde for over sixty years before closing in 2002. The complex also housed the Inverleven and Lomond malt stills, now also gone.
The spirit was distilled in continuous column stills for a light, sweet grain, giving a clean, mellow grain whisky. Ex-Bourbon casks held the grain for decades, soft oak that drives the sweetness. Ethereal and old, oak lactones give a profound coconut and vanillin a waxy vanilla, over tropical fruit and mellow oak. Grain whisky like this rewards very long maturation, the wood giving most of the character. Patient ageing gives the oily, waxy texture prized in old single grain. The clean grain base lets the cask speak clearly across the long years. No more will ever be made, the distillery silent since 2002.
Bottled at a cask strength 49.4%, it is rich. Oak lactones lend a deep coconut and vanillin a sweet vanilla, with a crème brûlée richness. Soft toffee and vanilla sit behind the sweetness. It finishes clean, sweet and buttery. This is an old Lowland single grain of real character.
