Description
The Caskhound bottled this Tamdhu single malt, a 10 year old Speyside malt from 2016, drawn from cask 57 and bottled at 57.8%. The outturn was 310 bottles. Tamdhu was built in 1897 by the Spey at Knockando, and it long fed blends before its single malt revival. Tamdhu ran the last Saladin box maltings in Scotland, the boxes still standing on site.
It was drawn off copper pot stills fed by the Tamdhu Spring, for the full, fruity make that suits sherry maturation. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut. At this age the spirit is fresh and fruity, the sherry bright over orchard fruit. The cool Speyside climate gives a slow, even maturation over many years. A full, fruity spirit gives Tamdhu the weight to carry active sherry wood. An in house cooperage was set up in 2019 to manage its sherry casks. Tamdhu sits among the great sherried Speysiders, a sister to Macallan in style. The Spey valley's cool air gives a slow, even maturation in the warehouses.
Undiluted at 57.8%, it is layered. The Oloroso brings a fruity, sherried depth. Beneath it run fig, raisin and a warm spice. A dried fruit and ginger finish lingers long. This is a rich, sherried Speyside single malt.
