A 5 year old Mount Gay bottled by Dugas for La Maison du Rhum's Discovery range. Mount Gay is the heritage name of Barbados, marketing itself as the world's oldest commercial rum distillery from a deed dated 1703, and this young expression offers an accessible look at its pot and column house style.
Matured in ex-bourbon oak and bottled at 40%, it is light and easy: vanilla, coconut, soft wood and pastry on the nose, a gently peppery, spiced palate, and a buttery, creamy, vanilla led finish. At five years it is fresh and uncomplicated rather than deep, a soft entry point to Barbados rum that favours smoothness over intensity. Unsweetened, in the classic toffee and vanilla Bajan register.
