Description
A 41 year old Dufftown from the Italian bottler Moon-Import, distilled in 1978, from cask 259, bottled at 52%. Dufftown is a Speyside single malt, founded as the Dufftown-Glenlivet distillery in 1895. It runs a full lauter mash tun, twelve washbacks and six stills, and works around the clock.
The spirit was run through the stills on water from Jock's Well in the Conval Hills, the long ferment building a grassy, fruity character. First fill bourbon gave a fuller vanilla and a touch of coconut from the lactones. At a great, fragile age oxidation rules, sotolon lending maple and dried fig as beeswax and a nutty honey linger. Refill oak lets the nutty, malty Dufftown character lead the way. Built for the blender's art, the spirit ages with grace as a single malt. Its water is drawn from Jock's Well, an artesian spring in the Conval Hills. Active wood frames the fruit without overwhelming the smooth Speyside spirit.
At a hearty 52% it carries real weight. Apple, malt and a soft honey, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Soft orchard fruit and a nutty malt sit behind the cask. A smooth, malty finish ends on apple and a soft spice. This is a smooth, nutty Speyside single malt.
