Description
Draga is a small family estate in the Collio of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, a band of hills in the north-east corner of Italy up against the Slovenian border. Mitja runs the winery his parents founded in 1992 and farms with environmentally friendly methods that let the site speak. The Collio's hillside vineyards sit on ponca, an alternating marl and sandstone that weathers readily and feeds the fresh, textured whites the zone is known for. The hills bring cool nights and good drainage, holding acidity and aromatic detail in the grapes. This Pinot Grigio is fermented dry and rested on its fine lees, a contact period that fills out the texture and adds a subtle savoury, nutty depth alongside the fruit. Expect a pale colour with a copper tint, a nose of ripe pear, white peach and green apple, and a palate that is dry and crisp with a gentle almond note through the finish. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees in a white wine glass.
