Description
Dr. Loosen has farmed in Germany's Mosel Valley for more than two hundred years, working the steep slopes that line the river. Red Slate Trocken is a dry Riesling drawn from vineyards on red Devonian slate, a warmer, iron-rich stone that ripens the fruit a shade rounder than the grey slate sites while keeping the racy Mosel acidity. The vineyards are steep and south-facing, so the vines catch maximum sun in a cool climate, and the stony ground radiates stored heat back at night. The wine is fermented cool and made young without oak, which keeps the fruit clear and the mineral character to the fore. The colour is pale with green tints. The nose is herbal and citrus-driven, with green apple, lemon, white peach and elderflower. The palate is light, rounded and saline, with crisp acidity and a stony, mineral finish that carries the slate through. Alcohol sits low at 12.5 percent, so it drinks fresh. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees.
